In the past century we have seen systematic progress in designing and rescaling the advanced electronic materials and quantum devices. The mankind has benefited from ever greater mastery in growth and understanding of semiconductors heteroepitaxies, in transistors and solid state lasers. The trend is continuing in superconducting / magetic / photovoltaic oxides and emerging multiferroic devices. In this overview I discuss recent progress and some challenges in the growth and mastery of funcional quantum materials, with an emphasis on insulator-metal transition in the nanoscale limit.
